In 1925, a diphtheria epidemic threatened Nome, Alaska. The serum was 674 miles away, and the only way to get it was by sled dog. Balto led his team through a blizzard, delivering the serum in just five and a half days. This heroic act saved countless lives and is commemorated by a statue in New York's Central Park.
